God's Word
Why Scripture is alive, not just old
Verse 1
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalms 119:105 · KJV
Describes God's word as a lamp to guide our feet and a light for our path.
Verse 2
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
II Timothy 3:16 · KJV
Establishes that all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for training in righteousness.
Verse 3
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Psalms 119:11 · KJV
Hiding God's word in the heart is the defence against sin.
Verse 4
“Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”
Jeremiah 23:29 · KJV
God's word is compared to fire and a hammer that breaks rock in pieces.
Verse 5
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4 · KJV
Jesus uses Scripture to resist temptation, declaring that man lives by every word from God.
Verse 6
“Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”
Psalms 119:160 · KJV
Affirms that the entirety of God's word is truth and all His judgements are eternal.
Verse 7
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12 · KJV
The word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.
Verse 8
“For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.”
Psalms 119:89 · KJV
Anchors confidence in the word of God in its eternal, settled nature.
Verse 9
“But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”
Luke 11:28 · KJV
Jesus pronounces blessing on those who hear the word of God and obey it.
Verse 10
“But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”
I Peter 1:25 · KJV
Declares that the word of the Lord endures forever — and this is the gospel preached to us.
