Identity in Christ
Who are you now that you belong to Him?
Verse 1
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
II Corinthians 5:17 · KJV
States that anyone in Christ is a new creation; the old has gone, the new is here.
Verse 2
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”
I Peter 2:9 · KJV
Calls believers a chosen people and a royal priesthood — identity shaped by God's calling.
Verse 3
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
Galatians 2:20 · KJV
Describes life in Christ as the crucified self replaced by Christ living within.
Verse 4
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
John 1:12 · KJV
Defines identity as child of God for all who receive and believe in Jesus.
Verse 5
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Romans 8:1 · KJV
Removes the identity of condemned sinner for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Verse 6
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 · KJV
Identifies believers as God's handiwork, created for good works He prepared in advance.
Verse 7
“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”
Colossians 3:3 · KJV
Grounds identity not in the visible self but in a life hidden with Christ in God.
Verse 8
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:15 · KJV
Contrasts a spirit of slavery and fear with a spirit of adoption by which we call God Father.
Verse 9
“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”
Galatians 3:26 · KJV
Declares that all who have faith in Christ Jesus are children of God.
Verse 10
“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”
I John 3:1 · KJV
Marvels at the love that calls us children of God — and says that is what we truly are.
